Sweeny ISD Receives Technology Lending Grant

July 17, 2020 - Sweeny ISD was awarded a $49,000 Technology Lending Grant from the Texas Education Agency.  The grant will be used to purchase Chromebooks and protective cases for the incoming freshmen class.  Sweeny ISD is a one-to-one district that currently provides iPads for students to use at school and at home.  The Chromebooks will replace iPads for this grade level and provide students with a device that will support a variety of technology applications to enrich core-curriculum content and promote greater student engagement, growth, and academic success.

“We focused on our ninth-grade students as their grade level utilizes digital instructional materials in their four core curriculum courses.  In each of these courses, staff rely on the use of digital textbooks with students, while integrating a number of other online resources to provide individualized, differentiated learning supports,” said Dr. Tory Hill, Superintendent of Sweeny ISD.

TEA’s Technology Lending Grant is a competitive grant awarded to only 144 districts across the state each year. The purpose of the grant is to provide districts the funds to purchase technology devices that are loaned to students for access to digital instructional materials off campus. Thus, it seeks to ensure equitable access to quality digital resources and courses.

“We are excited about this opportunity.  Our students have expressed interest in having a device with a built-in keyboard which is more conducive to research and collaborative student productions at the secondary level,” said Dr. Tory Hill.

Chromebooks will be checked out to students during the first few weeks of school, and the Sweeny Connected technology initiative will continue to provide T-Mobile hotspots and iPads to all other students in the district during the 2020-2021 school year.
