Guidance Letter to Families

March 18, 2020

Sweeny ISD is working quickly to develop resources and guidance to assist staff and families during this unprecedented time. While the school district may be closed through April 10th, our students will continue to receive quality instruction by completing assignments that teachers will provide virtually. Our staff is working on sharpening their blended learning skills and have acquired new tools and strategies in preparation to move the classroom to the cloud as we transition teaching and learning beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Teachers will post assignments using a web-based learning management system called Canvas.  Students will have access to the Internet and digital resources using their T-Mobile hotspot and district supplied device if needed.  We are including in this mailing an item called a Quick Card. This card has a QR code that, when scanned with your phone or iPad, will take your student directly to a screen that provides access to various web-based resources, including the Canvas learning platform.

Families are highly encouraged to ensure students have scheduled times each day to complete learning assignments. In addition to completing their assignments, students are encouraged to Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) for at least 20 minutes each day.  In the near future, we will publicize the launch of our Sweeny ISD Digital Learning website for families. This site will provide you with additional links to learning sites and information to assist you in navigating the process of partnering with your child’s teachers for digital learning success.

You are also encouraged to reach out to your child’s teacher(s) for virtual conferences if needed, as they will be available to respond. Our goal is to continue to provide rigorous and meaningful instruction during this uncertain period in time to try to avoid learning gaps for our students. We thank you in advance for partnering with us as we continue to prioritize student learning during this time.
